Watford Bid wins national award

Watford BID (Business Improvement District) has won an award for Place Management at the National BID Awards for its role in delivering the recent improvements to Watford High Street.

The BID, a not-for-profit company funded by Watford town centre businesses, worked closely with Watford Borough Council and Hertfordshire County Council on the redesign of Watford High Street, which has improved the street scape of the town centre and reduced the number of vehicles, making it pedestrian and cycle friendly.

The awards acknowledge outstanding projects delivered by BIDs around the country. The winners were decided by the National BID Advisory Board and a public vote. They were announced at the National BID conference in Cambridge last Thursday (8th November 2018), run by industry association British BIDs.

Maria Manion, Chief Executive of Watford BID said, “We are thrilled to win this award and get national recognition for the work we do in Watford. Together with our partners, we saw the opportunity to reimagine the High Street; to make it more pedestrian friendly and redesign it in a way that would seamlessly link the High Street in with the new intu Watford shopping centre, ensuring that Watford town centre is seen as one destination.“

At the conference, the BID also received a British BIDs accreditation certificate for its quality of management and the effective delivery of services for its members. The company’s Head of Operations Jill Farnsworth, was also presented with a Certificate in BID Management and Watford was announced as the location for the next British BIDs away day in April 2019

Professor Christopher Turner, Chief Executive of British BIDs said: “It is terrific news for Watford BID; gaining Accreditation, winning the National BID award and having a key member of their staff graduate with the Certificate in BID Management. All three were celebrated at the British BIDs conference in Cambridge last week, and all three are a sign that the levy payers of Watford are receiving truly excellent service. We congratulate Watford BID on these successes.”

Elected Mayor of Watford Peter Taylor said: “I’m proud that Watford has such a vibrant and thriving town centre, so it’s great to hear that Watford BID has been recognised with a National BID Place Management Award. The council, alongside the BID and our partners, have invested in our town centre to make it more attractive, less polluted, pedestrian and cycle friendly town centre. The newly renovated High Street and intu extension is set to put Watford in the Premier League of shopping and leisure destinations in the country. Autumn 2018 has been a landmark moment for the town, and the new shops, cinema, restaurants and bowling alley will be great for all residents to enjoy. At a time when many High Streets across the country are struggling, I’m delighted that we have been able to buck the trend.”

Watford Business Improvement District (BID) was set up in April 2016, after businesses voted on its creation in October 2015. The BID aims to improve the town centre so that it excels as a place to work, a place to do business, a place to shop and a place to visit.
