Funding available for business & shop improvements

Town centre organisations now have the chance to apply for funding to improve the appearance of their property or make enhancements that will increase the sustainability of their business, thanks to a new grant scheme launched by Watford Business Improvement District (BID).

The BID has set aside a total fund of £20,000 for this pilot scheme, which will run until end of March 2019. Any business that is within the business improvement district area and pays an annual BID levy is eligible to apply for a grant of up to £2000.

Maria Manion, chief executive of Watford BID said, “With over £200 million being invested in the intu Watford shopping centre and £3 million in High Street improvements, we believe it’s an ideal time for town centre businesses to invest in their frontages, update their internal layout or make other business improvements.

“The attractive appearance of our shops and buildings is vital in helping increase footfall and these grants can deliver subtle changes that would complement the major works in progress, improving the overall impression of our town centre.

The business improvement scheme is the latest in a host of initiatives that Watford BID has undertaken in an effort to enhance and maintain the town centre as an attractive destination for residents, visitors and those who work within the area.

Maria Manion continued: “We want to support businesses who are committed to improving the appearance of their property, but we also welcome applications from any eligible organisations with other ideas for improvements that will enhance their business and the customer experience.”

Past project milestones for Watford BID, aimed at improving the town centre’s aesthetic, include the installation of summer floral displays throughout the High Street, new festive lighting - in partnership with Watford Borough Council, town centre maps and colourful imagery on hoardings around building works. The BID will also be installing some clean art displays on the flyover on The Parade later this month. These projects all sit under theme 1 of the Watford BID Five Year Business plan, which aims to improve the look and the feel of the town.

Maria Manion added: “Over the last two years, we’ve made a number of concerted efforts in improving the appearance of Watford town centre for those who work, live and visit it on a regular basis. This work has been complemented by our other initiatives, including our Watford Weekenders, our Food & Drink Week and the Service Excellence Awards.
